Robert Skene, one old guy with a backpack, briefly described his tour through parts of South America this past winter at Dryden's last meeting in March.

Skene flew to Cuenca, Ecuador ( 2 degrees south of equator) to meet with Mike Bilsbarrow, resident of Dryden who lives in their for the winter months. After a couple of days visiting in the area and getting acclimatized, Bob & Mike set off on their adventure known as “ DOS VIEJOS CON MOCHILAS” ( 2 old guys with packsacks )

Skene talkOn February 12th flew to Lima from where they hopped on a luxurious long distance bus south, through a hundred miles of desert arriving in Nazca, site of the famous Nazca Lines.

Next they visited Arequipa, The White City after its famous white buildings. Most cities have a very European flavour as they were initially constructed by the Spanish and Germans.

Eventually they arrived at the border with Chile and crossed over to Iquique which is a very attractive seaside resort city with a busy port and lovely beaches. The old part of town contains many beautiful old Victorian and Edwardian buildings dating from the heyday of the nitrate industry.

Plans to travel to Argentina were thwarted due to roads being impassable and as a result, the pair flew to La Paz, Bolivia , located 13500 feet above sea level. This resulted in altitude sickness.

A few more stops including experiencing “ Carnivale” before flying back to Lima, from which Bob  headed home.
