Two well known community members, Mike Wood and Chris Marchand spoke to members of Dryden Rotary about their passion for the Ghost Lake Trails Association, a volunteer organization promoting hiking and biking on about 25 kms of interconnecting trails through the Mavis and Ghost Lake area northeast of Dryden.

This association is an alliance of mountain bikers, hikers, runners, naturalists and cottagers hoping to see this rugged wilderness area protected.  Mike & ChrisMuch of the existing trail system is single track and designed to discourage the use of motorized vehicles.

Last year, the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) learned about the Ghost Lake Trails and decided to drop in to see what they were all about. After a quality ride, they not only pitched in for some maintenance work but also provided some good advice on trail liability and trail standards that would help promote this “jewel of the north”.

So what’s the next step?  Signs... Signs that say where you are, signs that say how far to go and signs that say how tough the trail is.  With help from a grant from Patricia Area Community Endeavours, the Association is enlisting high school students to help build signs .

Mike and Chris want to promote a community sense of ownership over the Ghost Lake Trails. But Mike Wood isn’t like those 120 cyclists who rode the trails last year. He simply prefers to run them.
